Our Journey (Since 2010)!

The story of how it all started...

Kitchener Waterloo Guelph and Cambridge has been seeing a huge growth in the Bengali speaking population over the last decade. In 2010, a few Bengalis living the Waterloo region were able to create a "home away from home" feeling by initiating the first ever Durga Puja in Kitchener Waterloo. Durga Puja, the quintessential festival of joy celebrated by Bengalis all over the world has been at the heart of our community since then. Through the years this feeling of togetherness and friendship united more Bengalis arriving in the region and gradually we started celebrating other festivals and occasions as community together. The community not only celebrates religious festivals like the Durga Puja and Saraswati Puja, but also organizes Diwali and Basanta Utsav to bring everyone in the community together.

Our Durga Puja has been celebrated at the Emmanuel Church in Waterloo over the years. This being the biggest celebration for Bengalis, we see the highest footfall during this event. In the last few years, we have witnessed crowds of upto 300 people coming together to welcome Maa Durga. Our Durga Puja is a 1.5 day celebration starting with Mahalaya on the Friday evening and Durga Puja on the Saturday. On the day of the Puja, we start with the religious rituals in the morning, followed by bhog lunch to all those who come to celebrate with us. In the evening, we bring together the community into a cultural extravaganza followed by dinner. Traditional rituals like Dhunuchi Naach, Sindoor Khela and Shankha competition are organized to give everyone a taste of our cultural heritage back home.

This year we are planning to rent a larger space at St. Agatha Community Centre to celebrate our Durga Puja which will allow more people to join.
